How sad that a place that looks so much like any other thriving country, with people that look like they could be from anywhere, has to endure so much pain and destruction.
I have to admit, when I first began to be aware of the world outside of what I had traditionally been told, I was shocked to find so many Middle Eastern countries that do not fit the picture that the media has shown us. In particular to the case of Iran, we are told that they are a country controlled by a repressive government; yet, these images speak a different story. The election that occurred in Iran this year was perhaps the first time in recent history that American news outlets showed Iranians that were ready to speak out against their government; however, if we look at history, this sort of protest has been around since the 1970s if not earlier. When social revolution was taking place in American--via Second Wave Feminism, Civil Rights movements, and Queer activism--the same sorts of organizations were forming in Iran. Rather than look at this country as one that is failing, we should reconsider what our media is telling us about the country and realize that we know little of its complexities.
